Great little TV for the money!

Review Date: May 1, 2009
Reviewer: Dale J., Bristol, TN USA
I compared the picture quality of the Toshiba 19AV600U side by side with Samsung (at our local Best Buy) after tweaking both to their maximum quality and the Toshiba had truer colors with accurate flesh tones, probably due to the 10 bit color. The sound was also much better (and louder) than other TV's of the same size. If you can live without the headphone jack, then this will be a great choice, especially for a small bedroom or kitchen.

One more thing that impressed me and my daughter was how the TV cleaned up the standard analog cable channels, apparently due to the noise reduction feature, which we put on high. Some of the channels even look as good as digital or HD. The 19AV600U also has (2) HDMI jacks and is a great looking little TV even when it's off. We mostly buy SONY but was settling for Samsung (since Sony is not that impressive in this size range) until I ran across this little jewel.
Super Set Savings!

If you would like to know more go to your local stores, or read some more of this great reviews.

I forgot to mention in the review that the tuner inside picks up many channels and the HD channels off air are amazing! Just as great as a 1080p set, but listed as a 720 it works 1080 gorgeous.

Amazon.com has the most affordable price listed on this set.
I know how valuable time is, so this review and all of mine is done is 3 minutes even.

Great Value

Reviewer: gypsytoo,
Started looking for a television to replace an older model. Went to Best Buy to compare picture and sound quality side by side, and settled on this model. The ability to change the framing of the picture allows each individual to see what style they prefer, at the click of a button. The color quality is a true color representation, and again it is easy to change the brightness if you like. We chose to mount it on the wall, and with the thickness of just over an inch, it is not in the way when walking in front of it.

Amazon had the best price, by $50 over Best Buy when we were looking, and we were well satisfied with the delivery. Ordered at 5:00 p.m. one day, and had received it by noon the following day.

Would highly recommend this model to anyone.
Awesome Little TV!!

I just returned a piece of junk Coby 15" TV and purchased the Toshiba 19" 19AV600U for my kitchen. What a great TV. The picture is awesome, the viewing angle is great, and the feature set is better than most similar TVs. I really like being able to re-label the channel descriptions because I don't have a cable box and the HD channels are all over the place. I can label them and then save them to the favorites, which makes them easy to scroll thru. I thought I would save money with the Coby but what a piece of junk. It had a very poor picture and a terribly limited viewing angle. The coby stopped working after two days. I am very happy with the Toshiba and I'm sure you will be too.

This Toshiba 19 inch LCD has a great picture and good sound quality. It was purchased to be used in the kitchen area and has worked out well. I would recommend this to anyone needing a tv for a limited space.

Great Picture and Sound - Port Selection was interesting

Review Date: March 30, 2009
Reviewer: B. Hoak,
This is a new model (out March 2009), and is the just released 'B' version of the popular, judging by the many reviews, samsung 'A' version 32 inch TV. I wanted a TV with an excellent value for a 32 inch TV with a good 720p picture and sound. The picture is actually fantastic and looks good on the standard setting and really stunning at the dynamic setting (if the room is light enough), and in the store looked slightly better then Sony Bravia S-Series KDL-32S5100 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV, Black even though that TV is a 1080p one. I did a visual comparison of the two for a while in the store becuase I was trying to justify going 1080p but couldnt since this picture seemed better even at 720p. If I could, I would have gone for the Sony BRAVIA XBR KDL-32XBR9 32-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV which looked the best though for a 32 inch overall.

720p vs 1080p:
I couldn't understand why a 1080p TV would make a difference with this size of TV, since I sit about nine feet away and at that distance I don't think you could tell - at least the PC input is small enough and sharp enough that I can read web pages comfortably from my couch but if it were any smaller it would be too small/detailed. I dont think I would use more than 720p detail unless I wanted to see more web page content on the screen and planned to sit about 4 feet away. The TV has exactly the same resolution asToshiba Satellite U305-S2804 13.3-inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium) which is what I plugged into the PC input and looks identical to that screen. Also, most Hi Def inputs to my TV aren't more than 720p anyway. I think one over the air station is 1080i.

Standard DEF Input Handling:
For 480i or standard def inputs at a non wide screen resolution, such as those from my cable box, it handles it extremely well. However, I have a digital cable box (verizon QIP6416-2) with an HMDI, component, svideo, and RCA even though the signal I get is only standard def. I didn't want to use up an HDMI port on the TV so I tried connecting the component but the color didn't work. This is an issue with the cable box, not the TV. I had to use the HDMI in the end since there was no s-video (a small negative for this TV) and didnt want to use the RCA. On the plus side, this TV has a great setting called wide fit/move that slightly streaches and zooms a 4/3 picture to fit the 16/9 widescreen. The move comes into play if you have channel that has scrolling text that becomes cut off at the bottom, so you can nudge the picture up a bit (which chops off the top more but you need to make a comprimose somewhere).

Shines with HD inputs:
When I hooked the component connections up to an HD upscaling DVD player Samsung DVD-HD860 Up-Converting DVD Playerthough that worked perfectly with the component connection. My beloved Roku Roku Digital Video Player box is using the 2nd HDMI connector which looks great, and the over the air antenna CLEARSTREAM2 Antenna brings in over the air free HD on about 20 HD channels. All the HD sources (laptop, antenna, roku, upscaling DVD) really shine. Sound is good and I don't feel I need to get add on home theater sound since I dont turn the TV up loud. I guess an extra HDMI connection would have been nice, especially since there was no S-video, but I still give the TV 5 stars as it is a new model and is thus forward looking.
THE BEST LCD ON THE MARKET FOR ITS PRICE, PERIOD...

I badly needed a new television, and decided on a whim to head to best buy and see what was available. I hadn't been shopping for tv's in around 7 years, and from what I remembered that was when plasmas were amazing but all cost upwards of $4,000, and LCD, as a technology, just wasn't there yet. To my amazement the TV's in the store, even those well under $1,000, all looked fantastic. I settled on this tv after comparing it, endlessly, to other 32-inch models by Sony, Toshiba and LG. The Samsung had the best clarity, image depth and color. For only $550, this TV is gorgeous...standard cable looks good, DVD looks fantastic, and HD is just amazing. After initially thinking I wanted a 1080p HD, not 720p, I realized that in this size it just doesn't matter, and isn't worth the extra money. In all honesty, I felt like the 1080p image in this size television is a bit too sharp, a bit too bright and a bit too clear...it almost makes everything look like a cartoon or a video game. In the end, you really can't beat this television...the internal speakers sound great, it looks damn sexy in any room, and the picture quality makes you wonder why you paid so little...
Excellent Buy! Excellent Brand! Excellent Quality!

Much like many of the other customers who purchased the Samsung 32" B Series LCD television, I too, did MUCH research before buying this television. After going to Target, Walmart, BestBuy, and various online stores, I decided to purchase the Samsung after MANY comparisons, and for only $499.99 at BestBuy.

Between the price, brand name, and overall quality we can expect from Samsung, it just made sense to buy this television set over Sony. This television was bought with the intention of not spending more than $500 and having it perform at least above average for my bedroom.

Upon looking at comparable televisions, the Samsung had an AMAZING picture. It was EXCEPTIONALLY clear and very clean, new, and expensive looking. The options were exactly what I wanted: Computer input, 2 HDMI cable inputs, and multiple component inputs. It was 720P but after speaking with many owners and doing more and more research, it just isn't worth the money to purchase a 1080p TV set ($700+) when you WON'T be able to tell ANY real difference under 40" television sets - THAT IS A GUARANTEED FACT!

Hope that helped....
Stunning....

I've had mine for three days now and could not be more pleased. The picture is crystal clear, the colors are deep and the contrast is great. Good sound and easily set up, didn't have to consult the owners manual once. The remote is laid out well and everything is easy to access. The only minor thing I don't care for is how you access the sleep mode timer. Unlike most remotes with a dedicated button for the sleep timer on it, you have to open a menu and drill down to set the sleep timer. As this is a great bedroom size, this could be a slight annoyance for those who use the sleep timer function a lot. That is the only con I have on this beautiful TV. This TV has a lot of high end features such as being able to name the various inputs, such as calling HDMI 1 as Satellite, HDMI 2, as DVD etc. I'm very happy with mine and for the money, its fantastic.
Beautiful TV, Great Price

This is my first LCD tv, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. I am a student, and I needed something at the entry level price range, but I wanted something that I could feel confident purchasing. The picture quality is gorgeous, and the sound is pretty good too. I do not use the tv speakers as I run the sound through a receiver, but without one the sound is just fine. If you plan to watch Air signal programming, be sure to buy the antenna as well since you will need it to complement the tv's built-in tuner. Overall, I am a happy couch camper with this gorgeous LCD.

Samsung's Fabulous B630 Non-glare LCD HDTV

Review Date: May 11, 2009
Reviewer: Rich Vergo, The Jersey Shore
Being the first to review the 2009 Samsung LN40B630 on Amazon was purely an accident in that I actually bought the new Sony KDL-40V5100 on April 2nd. At that time, the Samsung B650 had just come out, but its high gloss panel would not have performed well in my brightly lit room. My high definition projection TV had kicked the bucket after 8-years, but I rarely enjoyed watching HD because the daylight glare would wash out the picture. The Sony's non-glare screen performed well except when the picture would black out during dark movie scenes. I discovered that many of the V5100 series have had this glitch and Sony had no fix for it at that time. To Best Buy's credit, they cheerfully exchanged the Sony under their 30-day return policy and delivered the Samsung B630 model which has a non-glare screen and is similar to the popular B650.

My expectations of the new Samsung were that it would perform much like the Sony. I could not have been more wrong. The B630 was like viewing another huge leap in a television experience, while the Sony seemed to be of past technology. The depth and breadth of Samsung's visual color tones are astounding and mesmerizing. A perfect example of that came from viewing scenes of the Caribbean Sea. The Sony could not match the Samsung's Wide Color Enhancer 3 processor with its three dimensional qualities and vibrant tones of turquoise, sea green, cobalt blue, coral pink and white sand clearly seen under the sea. It literally was like being there.

The Samsung's dynamic contrast of 80,000-1 was visibly superior to the Sony's 50,000-1 and convinced me that Samsung's contrast rating was more than a marketing numbers game. The viewing angle of the Sony was horrific when moving away from center by seeing flesh tones morph into green. Samsung's viewing angle was far better by maintaining the proper color tones, but it did lose contrast and brightness. Of course, a slight turn of its swivel base helped to alleviate Samsung's viewing angle issue.

The downside to Samsung's advanced technology was that every movie appeared as video and lost its magical cinema quality. Sony was superior in dealing with this issue. To address that problem, the backlight and contrast settings have to be toned down to soften the picture and to preserve a film's attributes. Most importantly, an adjustment to the 120 Hz Motion Plus feature must be done in order to keep movies from appearing surreal. While some recommend turning the 120 Hz off, I found video blurring far too annoying and placed the Auto Motion Plus to a custom setting of 6 for blur and judder reduction. That seemed like a good compromise without losing much of the film's realistic movement. Experiment with every adjustment to find your best settings and calibration instructions are easily found on [...]. It all came together beautifully for me and hopefully this information can be helpful to you.

One bad design feature was the power and channel functions on the TV itself. You cannot see where they are unless you have light shining directly on them. As long as you use only the remote control, it may be a non-issue. By-the-way, in case you were wondering how effective the non-glare screen was on the Samsung B630; it was perfect. I experienced crystal clear high definition TV -- Day or Night.

An excellent LCD HDTV at any price!

I recently purchased this item locally but am so impressed by the TV that I felt I should post my impression for others trying to decide where to spend their hard earned money, especially these days.

First, I would recommend that you to your local electronics store and look around and see which sets grab your attention as what is best to my eyes may not work for you. In my case I was somewhat limited in selection since the TV must fit into a TV cabinet that we own, so 40" was my absolute max. This criteria limited me to Sony, Samsung, and Vizio (in order of price point). A local warehouse club had the Vizio and a comparable Samsung (ln40b610 vs. ln40b630) for side by side comparison, and simply put there was no comparison what-so-ever. The Samsung wins hands down in terms of picture clarity, overall brightness, and contrast. The 80,000:1 contrast on this TV really shines. The Samsung to Sony comparison was a bit tighter as both units offered incredible picture quality and features but again the contrast ratio on the Samsung just made everything appear more pleasing to my eye. Given this, we purchased the Samsung and haven't looked back. Every time my wife and I watch a Blu-ray movie we are even more impressed with the picture quality! Seriously, this is a great TV at any price. The only TV I looked at that had better contrast was the Samsung LED (3,000,000:1) model but the price difference was just too much to justify.

I do have to agree with other reviewers regarding the "Auto Motion" settings producing images that are almost surreal. I have found that setting this on the middle setting produces the best results for me, but I have not played much with the custom adjustment mode yet, so I will hold off on a final review until I have had more time to tweak.
Amazing picture with tons of options for tweaking

Review Date: July 6, 2009
Reviewer: eddiebones,
My old RCA 27" tube finally died, so it was time to enter into the world of HDTV's. After a ton of research and price hunting, I settled in on this 40" model for the full 1080, 120hZ experience (plus a smokin' deal from Amazon helped seal the deal).

First one arrived shattered, so that was a bit of a buzz kill. Fortunately the delivery includes set up & power up, so we immediately saw that the thing was destroyed. The delivery crew took it back with them and Amazon got another one out. The 2nd one arrived in perfect condition, and after getting DirecTV out to install the HD dish, I've been on HD for about a week now. I know this is not part of the product review, but Amazon's customer service was excellent in this matter.

All I can say is that the picture is more than I anticipated, having never owned an HDTV before. The clarity is unreal, the colors and images just pop off the screen.

Sports and movies are incredible to watch. I do see how some folks are a bit taken aback by how crisp movies appear (as if in 3d), and they have to get used to the look of cinema based stuff. It doesn't really bother me that much, as I know that's the byproduct of HD. It's crisp. It's clear. But I set the 120Hz option to standard, and I find that works well enough for my eyes. There are certain scenes in some movies that just look surreal, but not in a bad way (at least to me).

The amount of control that this TV gives you to adjust the picture is great -- you can stick with one of their built in "modes" (dynamic, standard, natural or movie) and then customize every aspect of the picture as much as you wish. I spent a couple of days just playing with the settings & calibrating. The dynamic mode is way too bright, and gives results that are just not natural. I've found that the "natural" mode works best for me, with additional adjustments in contrast & brightness to enhance the blacks as much as possible. The "standard" mode allows you to push the blacks even more deep, so I've been going back & forth between both that & "natural". If desired, you can adjust for gamma, white balance, flesh tones, so you can go pretty deep.

I do have to say that at this point, the 120Hz feature doesn't really appear to add that much. I did read in a number of reviews that it is not easy to discern the difference between 60 and 120Hz in most viewing situations. A fast millisecond response rate is where you want to be, and with this TV's 4ms response time, there's no issues. And for me, I don't mind having a little blur on fast moving scenes.

I have watched movies & sports on my dad's samsung 37" HDTV (LN37A450), which is a 60Hz model, and have to say that the picture looks just as incredible as on this 40". So if you're looking to save a couple hundred bucks, don't get too hung up on the 60Hz/120Hz issue. Go with the 60Hz, and you'll be plenty satisfied. But if you can get a deal for a 120Hz Samsung for under $1k, it's worth it. Always nice to have extra options, as long as you're not breaking the bank to do it. I just have not seen a major difference between the two. Having said that, I've not watched any blu-ray movies yet, but have watched a couple of HD movies from DirecTV. But most of the complaints about the 120Hz are with people who think it makes movies look weird -- so again, 60Hz won't kill you there. If you're a gamer, you may want to do some more research on it. I don't own an Xbox, Playstation or Wii, so I can't speak to that.

Many complain about the sound on this TV as well, but I found that with the surround turned on, the TV gives off a pretty decent output. I hooked up the stereo to the tv, so usually have the audio coming through the full stereo. But on it's own, the TV isn't too bad, especially for such a slim profile.

The touch of color is a really nice feature as well -- it does give the TV a very sophisticated look. I was concerned that the red may be distracting, but it's tastefully done and very subtle.

Overall, I don't regret purchasing this TV - I could've saved some $$$ by going with the B550 model and sticking with 60Hz, but for the price that Amazon had at the time($999), I felt that I'd just get the extra options.

For what it's worth, I believe that this TV is also an 'A' panel. I'm not even sure if there are 'S' panels being made anymore. If the last letter of the serial number is how this is determined, then I don't see 'S' panels on any of their models. But whatever type panel it has, it doesn't matter. It looks fantastic, and even more so after being adjusted/calibrated best to display in my living room. There is a review out there (hi Matt!!) that gave the tv one star because of this panel issue...but said little to nothing else on how the tv actually was performing. One of the complaints about 'A' panels was that the 'off angle' viewing was very poor. First of all, I don't know why you'd want to view these TV's from too severe of an "off angle" -- you want to be in front of it as much as possible -- maybe 45 degrees off...but I've also inspected it from severe angles (pushing 160-170 degrees) and the picture holds up just fine.

This model is fantastic. I still can't believe my eyes when watching some stuff...there was a show about the Grand Canyon on National Geographic channel this weekend. All I can say is, wow. Unbelievable. The epic Wimbledon final between Federer and Roddick was also fun to watch.

No regrets here at all. Great TV. Brilliant picture, with plenty of options to tweak to your preference.

FANTASTIC.

I needed a TV to replace an old 27" CRT in the bedroom, and after lots of shopping and comparing and reading my wife and I chose this one - we got a heck of a package deal on the TV, an 8' HDMI cable, and a Sylvania Blu-Ray player all for $999 (thank you AMAZON!!! - what a great purchasing experience from start to finish - including CEVA shipping/delivery!). The TV just arrived today (10 days from first placing the order), we got it set up within minutes, and the picture right out of the box looks fantastic - truly stunning. The 120Hz makes a noticeable difference in reducing motion-blur, and improves the overall clarity and crispness of the picture in my opinion. I love the fact that there are so many ways to adjust/tweak different settings to your own tastes - so if you don't like the de-judder effects but want the blur reduction, you can adjust them independent of one another - something the A series from last year doesn't allow.

Sound was a little thin initially, but some adjustments using the EQ and turning surround sound "on" made it sound much better. I plan on calibrating the picture later this week and can't wait to watch Blu-Ray movies on it, but believe me when I say that the picture will not disappoint.

Chose the Samsung b630 over the b650 series because a) it was significantly cheaper at the time we ordered, b) doesn't have the extra "widgets" that are useless to us, and c) has a semi-matte screen instead of the "ultra clear" screen of the 650s, which works great for us as we have some windows/lights to contend with. Chose the Samsung brand over other brands because of the price/performance ratio and all the positive reviews that these TV's consistently get. Finally, we chose LCD over other technologies because at this size (40"), LCD gives the best price/performance and doesn't use as much power as some of the other TVs (e.g., plasma).

This TV (as well as the bigger sizes) would be perfect as a primary TV - being able to use it as a secondary TV in the bedroom makes it seem like I really splurged - but it was a great bargain in my opinion and definitely MONEY WELL SPENT.
One of the best in terms of getting your bang for your buck

Well, this is my first HDTV, so obviously I'm blown away by the visuals. Even playing regular old DVD's look 10x better than they did on my old CRT TV. I won't bore you with the same raving reviews that others have already given this fantastic TV (though they are all correct - this TV is AMAZING). Instead, I have a few things I'd like to point out that maybe contradict what others have said or offer a different point of view:

The sound. Coming from a standard def TV and having never used external speakers, I have absolutely no problem with the sound output of this TV. At max volume it's way louder than you'd ever want it to be, and I find the clarity to be on par with what I'm used to. In the world of music I consider myself an audiophile (all mp3's at 320kbps or greater, as I can easily hear the differences in it vs 128kbps - just so you know my ears are still good). However, in the world of TVs I guess I'm not. I found it to be loud and crystal clear, so if you're like me and never used an external speaker setup then this set should be fine.

The Red Touch of Color. I didn't notice too many reviewers of this model complaining about it, but on others in the Samsung series some people HATED it. I even read one or two of people RETURNING THEIR TV because of it. Just wanted to say that's assinine. When the TV is on you can't even see it unless you are actively looking for it. When the TV is off it's subtle enough that it's either not noticed or perceived as a nice touch to the set.

The matte screen. The matte screen is great at removing glare from ambient lighting. My fiance and I usually have a lamp turned on while watching TV and I've never noticed a glare at all from it. Sunlight through the windows can be seen sometimes, but I suppose that is all based off of where you are sitting, the position of the window to the TV, etc. It does a good job with ambient lighting, but don't think it'll magically remove all glares all the time.

The buttons on the display. Yep, everybody's right. They're difficult to find. Don't lose your remote because Samsung really dropped the ball on this one. Oh well, life goes on, and all in all it's not that big of a deal.

Infolink. Pretty useless at the moment. Gives a broad weather forecast and some news highlights, but nothing special. What I'm excited about is what they do with it in the future. Having an ethernet port on a TV opens up so many posibilities. I can't wait to see what they bring to the table in future models (maybe some Amazon VoD? Netflix streaming? Or how about an internal HDD that automatically fetches the latest edition of podcasts you watch on a weekly basis? Or even a web browser!) I already do these things via my Xbox 360 or using an external HDD connected to the USB port, but it would be nice if this was all integrated into the TV in a future model. I'm very excited to see where the industry goes with this.

Overall, this TV is just plain awesome. And if you're lucky enough to get it under $1000 like I did, then you're getting one heck of a deal. I've been looking for a TV that meets my high standards for about the last 8 or 9 months, and I stumbled upon this one at a price hundreds below what I was willing to spend. Fantastic deal, fantastic TV. You're gonna love it.

And now for my review of CEVA (which in no way will reflect the score I give this PRODUCT. This is a place to rate PRODUCTS, not the service you get from Amazon or other sellers!!).

CEVA was quite simply the most unprofessional service I've ever been given. He did arrive at my place on time, at which point he said he needed my help getting the TV from his van to my living room. Bring a dolly? A cart? So I give him a hand with that, and when he starts unboxing it and tells me "Okay, now you grab that end and we'll lift it straight up...." Oh, ok, so I guess now I'll be setting it up with him, even though it's his job that he's paid to do.

We get it unwrapped and he needs to install the the stand that came with it. The instructions he was reading for it (4 simple pictures in total) indicated he needed to use 8 screws, but the TV came with 12! Oh no! Not 12! What does this mean?! He was completely dumbfounded about why they would send 12 screws if the instructions only called for 8. I had to convince him that it was ok and we could install the stand the way the instructions said. He stayed confused for about the next 5 minutes and finally gave in. He looks at me and says "Ok, well where's your screwdriver? Gonna need a philips head." Are you kidding me? This is your job and you don't bring your own tools?! I don't mind letting people use my tools or anything, but I just can't believe this guy does this on a daily basis and doesn't bring his own equipment. Ridiculous.

Eventually we got the TV set up. Before I had a chance to plug the power cable in he was handing me a piece of paper to sign for delivery. At this point I was getting a bit frustrated, so I politely but firmly told him to wait while I make sure the TV turns on, gets a signal, and there are no signs of defects upon delivery. He obviously didn't like waiting, so I took my time :) Maybe that was my mistake because I then signed for delivery, at which point he assumes job complete. I looked over at the box and packing material and he tells me "Now I am supposed to take the box and everything away if you wish, but I strongly recommend not doing so because if that TV goes bad in a week or so they're gonna want the box it came in for returns." Not wanting to put up with him anymore, I told him to have a nice day. He didn't bother picking up the packing material or anything either. Pretty much left my living room a complete disaster.

Like I said earlier, my experience with CEVA was about as unprofessional as it gets.

Their Getting Better All The Time

Review Date: March 26, 2009
Reviewer: R. Nieuwpoort, Somewhere, USA
I'm not very good at the specifics, But I just had to be the first to say this is an excellent LCD. I Replaced my 19' Samsung with this 21' & I've been Impressed by the picture. The much needed improvements needed over the LN19A450 were very much needed.
This is a third gen LCD; sound is a little better with adjustments, but still the same speakers (Use Exteral Speakers), picture is much better & with the adustable backlight feature makes the picture a much deeper, richer screen to view. It has all the hookups you'll need Except it only has 1-HDMI input. The Price is Right & Shipping is Free.
...then Goldilocks said, "This one is just right."

Review Date: August 11, 2009
Reviewer: MollyDawg,
I originally bought the LN22B350, the latest unit in this series, but had to return it. You can read my review on it, but in short, it was because despite the literature stating that it has one composite AND one component input, it actually should read one composite OR one component. You could only use one or the other because they share the video input jack. So, after viewing an actual image of the input panel on this unit, I took a baby step back and ordered the B360.

Wait a minute! Amazon gave me a backhanded "upgrade" by erroneously shipping the LN22A450. The 4 series is better than the 3 series, but the A series is older than the B series. They were willing to let me keep it, but after doing a little bit of research I found that the technology has leapt forward since it was made. Among other things, it had only a 3000:1 contrast ratio whereas this one has 15,000:1. These days there's little difference between the massive numbers spun out by manufacturers unless you're in a high tech calibration setting, but when you talking one that low, it's not a good thing. So, one more swap and I got the LN22B360.

I really like this set. Unless you're an audiophile, there's not a single thing wrong with the sound. There are different settings and a bit of an equalizer to customize, and at the level of 44, the volume is excellent. People just need to understand that no manufacturer is going to put high end audio in a unit at this price point. The 22-inch set is not the one you want to pay $500 for, or should need that kind of audio. You're not going to get a lot of the bells and whistles you get with the bigger sets because that's not what people are using their small TVs for.

So after one that was too new for my old equipment, and one that was too old for the new technology, this one is just right. I chose Samsung for the on/off timer, of which this unit has three, and the options there are better than expected--select all days, weekdays, weekends, etc. The set-up was easy, the remote balanced (though no back light), buttons are a good size and arranged fairly intelligently. The smaller screen makes the 720p and 60hz non-issues. Since I don't pay for premium services, it was nice to see several channels airing in HD without a converter box. And on the down-low, I'm getting intermittent On Demand broadcasts, though I do wish whoever ordered them would take fewer potty breaks. Too much pausing and rewind. LOL!

I'm very satisfied with this purchase and hope to buy its big brother (46") in the future after I'm sure Samsung is the way to go (and I think it is).

UPDATE 12/22/09 -- Just wanted to add that I'm still liking this TV. It completely meets my needs and expectations, although the On Demand feed stopped, darn it!

I got this T.V. off amazon in march and I've had it for a little more than two weeks. I am very impressed with the product; it is a great T.V. for my ROOM, which is why I can't understand the problems people are having with the sound. First of all, the T.V. has good sound for one that is more suited for a bedroom (not a master sized); I don't believe it's best suited for either the kitchen or living room (both too big). If you are that concerned about the sound, you can just plug in some computer speakers in the headphone jack for some richer sound, samsung didn't just build that in the set to make it look pretty. And if you're looking for a more expensive solution, then there's always digital audio. It's silly to expect that you're going to get the same kind of sound from a 22' inch that you would get on a 32' inch or larger. But everyone seems to agree that it has an excellent picture; images are clear and crisp, even in standard definition. Don't be influenced by the "bad sound" comments, it's a good buy.
Excellent TV!

Reviewer: T Brown,
This is a top notch HDTV for an excellent price... well below the equivalent at a Best Buy.

To begin with, this TV is attractive even when off. When on, the screen is bright and crisp. I've had no problems using it with either my PS3 or Wii... the "game mode" seems to do its job very well in minimizing the lag common in HDTVs. Assassin's Creed looks amazing, as does Mario Galaxy.

The TV has very full customizeability of picture, and I've had no problem making dark movies bright enough.

Contrary to some of the reviews here, I think the speakers are very satisfactory. They don't have a completely full bass sound, no, but they are plenty loud for my apartment. Despite a lack of deep bass the speakers give generally full sound, and do a good job mimicking surround output. A little tip - turning on the "true surround" feature lowers the volume by quite a bit. Sound a little quiet? Then turn off the surround setting and "settle" with excellent stereo sound... at volume 45 the TV is plenty loud (and it goes to 100). I compared the sound of various TVs at Best Buy and I honestly think this little unit has phenomenal sound for its size class... if you want better speakers built into a ~3" deep flat screen, well you are probably going to have to go for a fatter and larger TV. What do you want for such a slim unit?

The TV not having 1080P output isn't much of a con... most TVs this size do not offer that, and when they "do" it is usually just a downscaling of 1080P signal to the screen rather than truly displaying it. 720P and 1080i look pretty darn slick compared to a CRT analogue TV, let me tell you! Again, the PS3 looks awesome.

So - good sound for the size-class, crisp bright screen, high contrast, good performance on games... all for ~$[...]!

It should have an S-video input. I'm not sure why it doesn't. That made me a little sad, but I knew it didn't when buying it. Just upgrade to component or HDMI where possible if you've got an s-video device :-)

I have one real con for this TV - NOWHERE did I see this indicated - the TV has a completely unadjustable stand. On larger TVs, the stands don't have to be adjustable because their viewing angles are so large. But a smaller TV at 22" with a 160 degree viewing angle... it really does need to be able to tilt. I have it up on a dresser so I tucked some cardboard under the rear of the base to give it a slight tilt down. Thankfully the bright screen and decent viewing angles make this an acceptable arrangement, but if you have an off-optimal location for your TV consider the lack of adjustability when buying.

Still - excellent TV with better picture than a lot of the ones I've seen in stores. Definite steal at this price
No complaints good tv

After checking out LCD TVs of similar size in person at Best Buy, this Samsung model stood out for the quality of the display. It was much sharper, denser, and brighter than a comparable LG model, and it seemed sharper than the older Samsung models as well. I bought the Terk HDTVa antenna to go with it (I am using over the air reception instead of cable), and the picture on the HDTV channels I get is outstanding and never the slightest bit fuzzy or speckled. Analog channels look bad but you're not going to watch those anyway if there's an HD version. Without cable, I just pick up NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS but they all look great in HD. Just as an experiment, I switched the Terk Antenna on and off to see how well the built-in Samsung digital tuner worked without an antenna, and it seemed really similar but with a very tiny amount of speckling of images. So you could probably get away with not using an antenna if you live close to a tower(I live a couple blocks from a tower) I have no problem with the sound- I like how crisp and understandable it is at low volumes. This TV was extremely easy to set up as well- 20 minutes max.

The one remote solution delivered.
I have a very complex 7.1 audiophile audio/video set up: 1 Rotel preamp, 2 Rotel amps, Rotel 5 disc CD, Sony ES bluray, xbox 360, 50 inch elite plasma, an HD cable box, plus , lest we forget, an infrared Lutron dimmer (of course that doesn't include the 7 BW speakers and 2 subs!)
Total of 7 remotes some of which have a myriad of functions and controls!!!! Now I sit on my recliner, touch "watch DVD" on the MOTION ACTIVATED screen and voila! 30,000 dollars worth of electronic equipment come to life in concert doing exactly what I want to do with ONE STROKE.
Even better, most of the big components are in an out of view component cabinet that is not anywhere to be seen, with the IR wireless extender its no problem at all, it even controls my dimmer across the room! Programming is so darned easy its almost a sin and not only does it include a basic manu of functions it has essentially all the functions of the individual component remote! There is no doubt that this is not a cheap remote but it sure is second to none. It is more functional and simple to use than proffesional grade auditorium remotes that cost thousands of dollars and which dont have half the configurability of this remote. Truely a great piece of kit.

The Harmony 1100 is by far the best universal remote on the market. It looks great in black. The software is really easy to use and programming all 15 Electronic products I needed it to control, took me only 20 min. I would highly recommend this remote even at the $ 499 retail. Buy it from Amazon, you will not regret this purchase.

Already got mine at best buy, paid the $499.00 but I didn't feel like waiting for other cheaper places to stock it. This is an excellent item, I had the 1000 briefly but returned it:touchscreeen didn't seem responsive, and froze often. The 1100 works flawlessly. I also have the 550 and harmony one, I liked them but I am much happier with this. The setup was a little glitchy compared to previous model, but once you get past that the model is great. The touchscreen is just the right amount of sensitivity, the graphics are crisp. And I like how you can customize the touchscreen. This one is a keeper zero complaints.

This is a great remote control that has met all my expectations, and allows my wife to operate the home audio system with ease. Set up was straight forward, although the model of my Sony carousel CD/DVD player (DVP-CX985V) was not recognised. However that problem was overcome with the use of the DVD player remote, and most routine operations work fine. I need to learn more about the remote yet, and if I spend more time I'm sure I'll be able to get the remote to control more of the more complex operations.

Overall, I'd definitely recommend this remote for those who want a simple means of controlling their home theatre system with a single remote.
Almost too easy!

Review Date: February 24, 2009
Reviewer: David L. Bass,
The remote was so easy to set up that it was actually a little disappointing. The only frustration I had was my fault when I transposed two numbers when entering the model number of my cable box. Once I figured out that error it went really smooth. It is all set up. the software walked me right through the setup including setting up the activities. Push the activity button, push te TV button and everything powers on to watch tv. Push the DVD button and everything I need to watch a DVD starts up and the other items I don't need turn off. Want to turn it all off? Just push the off button and everything turns off. Want ot change the volume? Just push the volume button and it adjusts the surround sound and the channel button will change the channels. No having to select a button for surround sound to change the volume, picking up another remote to turn on the tv, than back to the first remote and pressing the cable box button so I can change channels, etc. Somebody mentioned using DVR he had to page through several screens. My DVR is built into my cable box, there is a record button on the 'watch tv' screen that will start recording whatever I am watching at the moment or push the menu button on the 'watch tv' screen and the DVR comes up on screen and I just select it like before. There is also a guide button that calls up my cable guide. This is exactly what I wanted all my other remotes to do but none would do it. They could operate some of the controls on some of the components but not all of them. My wife is totally thrilled, all the other remotes have gone to the bottom drawer of my night stand, hopefully to never be seen again. Plus the best thing about it is the 'wow' factor. It just has a really cool look with the color touch screen and ease of oparation.

Great Portable DVD/DTV Combo

Philips PET729/37 - 7 Inch LCD Portable TV / DVD Player

I purchased this as a Christmas gift for a friend and I always like to set things up to make sure the item is working before I give it to the party in question.

Setup was a breeze, very intuitive. I hooked it up to the cable system and it found every channel, it only took about 5 minutes and I was watching a very sharp picture on the 7" screen. Sound was good also, I think she will be thrilled with it. I got this as a lightening deal, but I think it is worth the full retail price.

Wow! what a deal. I purchased this for myself for Christmas of 09. It arrived quickly. The picture is very clear and the sound is loud enough for me. I pick up all the digital channels, even some I can't receive on my cable tv. The only thin complainant I have is that you can't control the on and off and the sound from the remote. But I still give it a five stars rating. Also it really sounds great when you hook up some small media speakers to it. If you can, get one that has a sub woofer. Pop some popcorn and enjoy.

I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH THE PURCHASE OF THE PHILLIPS PET729/37 - 7INCH LCD PORTABLE TV /DVD PLAYER. TALK ABOUT PORTABILITY, IT IS THE GREATEST. IT IS VERY LIGHT AND WAS EASY TO SET UP. THE TV AND DVD 'S COME IN VERY CLEAR. THE SOUND IS EXCELLENT AND LOUD. I WORK NIGHTS IN A PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL, DURING MY LUNCH TIME I CAN WATCH THE TV OR PLAY A DVD FOR A SHORT PERIOD. SOME OF MY CO-WORKERS WHO HAVE SEEN THIS HAVE ALSO BROUGHT ONE. I ALSO GAVE ONE AS A GIFT. I ALSO RECOMMEND BUYING THE TARGUS DVD 301 10 SPORT PORTABLE DVD PLAYER CASE. IF YOU BUY A 7 INCH CASE YOU WON'T HAVE THE EXTRA SPACE FOR THE EXTRAS. THE CASE ALSO HAVE ROOM FOR A LOT OF DVDS AND ACCESSORIES EASILY.
I DO HAVE ONE REQUEST, I WISH THE PRINT ON THE QUICK SET-UP GUIDE WAS LARGER, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE OF US WITH BAD EYE SITE. BUT DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU FROM BUYING THIS ITEM. THERE IS AN INSTRUCTION MANNUAL INCLUDED. I WAS SO EXCITED THAT I TRIED TO TAKE A SHORT-CUT TO SET IT UP.

I bought this tv/dvd player as a treat for myself, after saving up loose coins all year. I first purchased another brand (the Envizen), but the dvd player had problems, and it took a lot of effort to get any tv stations, so I returned it. But this Philips is wonderful. Without any effort at all, I received 10 local stations, easily and clearly. I lucked out and bought this product before the price went up, so I feel like I really got a great bargain. This is a great choice if you want both a dvd player and tv (especially if you have a power outage and are trying to keep up with the news...like during a blizzard such as I'm in the middle of now!).

This is #4...I've been looking for a "portable" TV since last summer, the 3 previous..would not receive any channels without hooking up to a antenna system. They were "back in the box" the same day. This unit found 5 with it's own antenna...good start. Picture is clear..display...full control of picture and channels. Remote controls everything, except ON/OFF and VOLUME.
The "fold" open/close is real handy, protects screen and a stable "foot" to set on a surface...DVD seems ok too(really just wanted a tv). Only feature missing is a "card slot"...pictures and music have to be on a disc. For the price..I rate it #1 value. Setup menus were very easy, speakers have good volume.

It takes longer to open the box than it does to replace the lamp.

Review Date: January 22, 2009
Reviewer: Neal R Boyd, Hammond, LA
When our TV's lamp went out, I was a little concerned about how hard it would be to change this thing out... I'm a computer geek by trade, but I honestly don't know a lot about HD televisions. I took a quick look at my TV's manual, and had learned how to pop the lamp in and out in just a few minutes.
Basically, you pop open one panel, turn a lever and pull out another panel, grab the old lamp by hook/finger handle, gently pull up and out. Push the new one in until it pops into place, make sure you replace the inner panel properly (the one with the lever, if not secured properly, the TV won't turn on), then pop the outer panel back on and there you have it, a TV again.
Our lamp has been in for several months, and the image quality (especially brightness) seems to be as good as I remember the stock lamp. Having said that, it may be the stock lamp.
Summary: if your WEGA or whatever goes black and this lamp fits into your unit, then get one. I like a bright TV in a dark room, as does my wife. We've both put this replacement lamp to it's paces, not to mention we leave the TV on when we're not home.

This lamp came from a third party vendor named VANN'S. I got it on time with no issues. Installation was extremely simple. It literally took me longer to open the box than it did to replace the bulb. This product includes the entire assembly. If you're handy and want to save a few bucks, you may consider purchasing just the bulb and reusing the old assembly that is not affected when the bulb burns out. I will do that next time.

Arrived very quickly. Good thing since I wasn't sure how long I had with current bulb since indicator message had been warning me for a few weeks.
